Observer-selection effect
A bias created because only observations compatible with an observer enter the sample. The missing cases are not merely unseen; nobody exists there to see them.

An observer-selection effect appears when the process that makes an observation possible also filters what can be observed. Ordinary selection bias already does this: a survey of people who answer the phone omits people who never pick up. The anthropic version is stronger. A universe without stable matter does not merely fail to return the questionnaire; it contains no respondent, instrument, or question. Every cosmological observation therefore arrives through the condition that an observer could arise to make it.
The effect can dissolve fake surprises. We should not be astonished to live during the narrow cosmic era after heavy elements exist but before the stars go dark, because those are the only eras in which beings like us could appear. It can also correct predictions: if a theory produces many regions, their raw volume is not automatically the distribution observers sample. Regions must first be weighted by whether they make galaxies, long-lived stars, chemistry, and whatever else the chosen observer requires.
The catch is that selection is not a complete explanation. Learning that every fish in a net is wider than its mesh explains the sample, not why the lake contains fish or why the net has that mesh. Likewise, the anthropic filter explains why we never observe a lethal universe from inside; it does not explain why the space of possibilities contains a habitable one, how often such universes occur, or which observers should count. Those questions lead directly to typicality and the reference-class problem.
