What this is

Break the Universe turns one of the deepest questions in physics into something you can play with. Move the constants of nature, watch a cosmos live or die, and feel — not just read — how narrow the window for life really is.

What's inside

The Universe Tuner is the centrepiece: nine dials, one habitable window — ignite and watch a cosmos live or die. The local Notebook preserves and compares the experiments worth questioning. 'You Shouldn't Exist' stacks the odds against you existing at all. The Doomsday Argument bounds how long our species has left. A short quiz places you among the four answers to fine-tuning. A Graveyard collects the universes people chose to publish, and a weekly challenge rotates a tuning goal. The Learn essays tie every one of them back to the real physics.

Playful, but honest

The simulations are toy models: the right orders of magnitude, dressed up for drama. They're built to give you intuition and vertigo, not to pass peer review. Where we simplify, we say so — and the couplings between the dials are real enough that no two universes you break look or die quite the same.

Neutral by design

Fine-tuning attracts strong opinions — brute luck, necessity, a multiverse, a designer. We take no side. Each answer gets its strongest case and its honest catch. The goal is to understand the question, not to win it.

About the name

"Anthropic" is a term from cosmology, coined in 1973 — half a century before the AI company borrowed it. This site is about the physics, and is not affiliated with any company that shares the word.

Who made this

One person — Lukasz Szramuk — because the anthropic principle deserves something you can play with, not only read about. It isn't a company, a product, or a funnel: there is nothing to buy and nothing to sign up for. If it made you feel the narrowness of the window, even for a second, it did its job. Questions and bug reports are genuinely welcome.

Built with Next.js and a single HTML canvas that runs a live particle model of every cosmos — no video, no images, just physics drawn at 60 frames a second. English and Polish from day one.
