Anthropic principle
The observation that a universe's features must be compatible with the observers who notice them — we could only have evolved where evolving was possible.

The anthropic principle is the simple, slippery observation that what we can observe must be compatible with the existence of observers. We could only have evolved in a universe where evolving was possible — so every measurement we make comes pre-filtered by our own existence. Brandon Carter coined the term in 1973, at a conference in Kraków marking Copernicus's 500th birthday: a deliberate counterweight to the idea that our position in the cosmos is never special.
Carter drew a line that still organizes the debate. The weak anthropic principle says our observations are biased by the requirement that observers exist — a selection effect, as uncontroversial as noting that every fish you catch was caught in water. The strong anthropic principle goes further and says the universe (or its laws) must be such as to admit observers at some point in its history — a claim about the laws themselves, which some read as near-tautology and others as teleology in a lab coat.
What the principle is not: an explanation. Saying 'we see these constants because we are here' describes the filter; it does not set the constants. That is why the strongest anthropic arguments always come paired with a pool of possibilities — a multiverse, a landscape, an ensemble — for the filter to filter. Fred Hoyle's 1953 prediction of the carbon-7.65-MeV resonance (life exists, therefore carbon must form, therefore this state must exist) remains the cleanest anthropic inference that actually paid off.
