Big Rip

If dark energy's repulsion grows with time, acceleration strengthens without bound and tears apart clusters, galaxies, planets, and finally atoms.

The Big Rip is the ending where expansion runs away with itself. It turns on one number: w, the ratio of dark energy's pressure to its density. A plain cosmological constant has w = −1 and pushes with constant strength forever. If w sits below −1 — 'phantom energy' — the push strengthens as space grows, feeds back on itself, and the acceleration becomes unbounded. Robert Caldwell, Marc Kamionkowski and Nevin Weinberg named the scenario and worked out its consequences in a 2003 paper subtitled Cosmic Doomsday.

What makes it vivid is the schedule. Unlike heat death, the Big Rip has a deadline, and almost everything happens in the last stretch before it. In the authors' worked example the end arrives about 22 billion years from now: the Milky Way comes apart roughly 60 million years ahead of it, the solar system unbinds about three months out, the Earth is torn open in the final half hour, and atoms dissociate in the last 10^-19 seconds. The tearing runs down the scales in order, because expansion overwhelms each binding force in turn — gravity first, then electromagnetism, then the nuclear forces.

Phantom energy is not a comfortable thing to postulate. It violates the null energy condition, and the field theories that produce it tend to carry negative kinetic energy, which makes the vacuum unstable. Measurement has not been kind either: dark energy's equation of state keeps landing within a few percent of w = −1, and the large recent surveys, where they lean at all, lean to the non-phantom side. The Big Rip survives as the well-posed edge case — what would happen if w turned out to sit just past a value we cannot yet exclude.

On this site the Λ dial is the nearest analogue: push the vacuum's push hard enough and you get a universe that never assembles anything at all. The Rip is that same failure arriving late instead of early — a cosmos that builds galaxies, stars and observers, then unmakes them on a clock.
