Cosmological constant
Einstein's lambda — the energy density of empty space. Discarded, resurrected, and now the worst prediction gap and strongest anthropic datapoint in physics.

The cosmological constant (Λ) is an energy density carried by empty space itself — the same value everywhere, at every time, undiluted as the universe expands. Einstein introduced it in 1917 to hold his field equations still, because he expected a static universe. Hubble's redshifts undid that by 1929 and Einstein dropped the term; Gamow later reported him calling it his greatest blunder, though the phrase is Gamow's and the attribution has never been solid.
It came back in 1998, when two supernova teams found distant explosions dimmer than a decelerating universe allows: expansion is speeding up. The number is now well measured — Λ carries roughly 69 percent of the energy budget, an energy density of about 6 × 10^-10 joules per cubic metre. That is an absurdly small quantity, and the smallness is the whole problem. Quantum field theory says the vacuum should carry zero-point energy up to whatever scale the theory stops working; take the Planck scale and the prediction overshoots by some 120 orders of magnitude. Even a supersymmetric cutoff leaves a mismatch of fifty-odd.
It gets called the worst prediction in physics, which is fair as a headline and unfair as an argument — the naive cutoff was never a real derivation, and what the discrepancy actually shows is that nobody knows how to compute vacuum energy at all. The anthropic response is the sharpest thing on offer. Steven Weinberg argued in 1987 that Λ cannot exceed a few hundred times the observed value in any universe that forms galaxies, because expansion would scatter matter before gravity could gather it. That is a bound derived from the existence of observers, published eleven years before the measurement, and it landed in the right place. It remains the multiverse's one genuine forecast.
On this site Λ is the dial with the sharpest edge. Almost every other constant gives you a window you can feel your way around; this one gives you a value that is essentially zero on any natural scale, and the universe stops building things the moment you nudge it. It is also the dial behind the heat death — the reason our particular cosmos ends slowly rather than not at all.
