The improbability of your existence, stacked from the Big Bang to the specific sperm and egg that became you.

Start with a universe that permits life at all, then narrow: a stable galaxy, a habitable planet, life igniting once in four billion years, and an unbroken chain of ancestors — every one surviving long enough to reproduce, without a single break.

Then come the human-scale long shots. Your parents, out of everyone alive, meeting at all. And then the lottery of a single sperm and a single egg — you, and not any of the millions of siblings who could have taken your place.

The cosmic leg of the relay

The early gates are the ones this site is about. Your matter had to be forged inside at least one earlier generation of stars, then scattered by a supernova into the cloud that became the solar system. The planet that condensed had to be rocky, in the temperate band, around a star boring enough to hold its temper for billions of years. Estimates of how many planets clear those gates vary wildly — from one in ten to one in millions — which is itself the lesson: we know the gates exist even where we cannot price them.

Four billion years of near misses

Life on Earth appears to have started once — every organism shares one genetic code and one last universal common ancestor. Then the ladder: oxygen-producing bacteria; the single merger, perhaps two billion years ago, that put a mitochondrion inside a cell and invented complexity; the Cambrian's sudden zoo; the vertebrate that crawled onto land. Each rung looks contingent in hindsight, and none had a backup plan we know of.

And the extinctions. Five times, most species on Earth died within a geological blink. Sixty-six million years ago an asteroid erased three-quarters of them, including every dinosaur that couldn't fly — and cleared the stage for small, nocturnal mammals to inherit it. Arrive thirty minutes earlier or later and it misses; no asteroid, no you. The chain doesn't just have weak links; it has links that were severed and re-tied.

The genealogy is the steep part

Now the improbability goes vertical. You have two parents, four grandparents, and the count doubles each generation — roughly 7,500 generations of humans, and before them an unbroken line back through early mammals, fish, and single cells. Every one of those ancestors, without exception, survived long enough to reproduce, through plagues, famines, winters and wars. Break the chain anywhere and the relay ends.

One cell in millions

The last gate is the narrowest. A fertile ejaculate carries on the order of a hundred million sperm; a woman ovulates one of the few hundred eggs she will release in a lifetime. That particular sperm and that particular egg made you; any other pairing makes a sibling. And behind that gate stand the meetings: your parents out of billions, their parents out of billions more, each introduction hinging on trains caught, jobs taken, and wars survived.

One in ten to the what?

The physician Ali Binazir once multiplied these odds together and arrived at something like 1 in 10^2,685,000 — a number with more zeros than there are atoms in the observable universe. It is not a serious calculation, and it doesn't pretend to be.

The exact figure is theatre. What survives the theatre is the vertigo: every ancestor, every coincidence, every near-extinction your lineage slipped through, all had to land exactly as they did. Change one and someone else is reading this.

What the number is good for

Here is the honest catch, and it matters: every detailed outcome is astronomically improbable. Deal a bridge hand and you hold one of 10^68 possibilities — yet nobody is shocked, because some hand had to appear. Improbability alone is not evidence of purpose. What makes your case feel different is that you are the observer doing the counting — the winners are the only ones who can be amazed, exactly as the anthropic principle says at cosmic scale.

The chain is improbable looking backward, but nothing aimed it forward; evolution doesn't plan, and 'it had to happen' has no causal force. The real question is not why you in particular, but how it is that anyone wins at all — and the answer is always the same: someone had to.

So treat the vertigo as real and the inference as optional. You are contingent beyond reckoning — and here, which is the only place contingency can ever be noticed. The Doomsday Argument points the same self-locating logic at your place in time rather than your place in existence, and it is considerably less comforting.

Astronomers have a name for this style of multiplication: the Drake equation, which stacks fractions — of stars with planets, of planets with life, of life with intelligence — to estimate how many civilizations share our galaxy. Your personal chain is the same arithmetic pointed inward: a product of gate probabilities, each genuinely uncertain, landing on one reader.

One more twist hides in the genealogy: go back far enough and the branches fold back on themselves. Thirty generations ago you have a billion ancestor-slots — more than the people then alive — so the same names recur through many channels. The chain is not a single thread but a braided river, and every channel carried water. You didn't descend from one improbable line; you are the confluence of all of them.

The unborn crowd

Against the one winner stands the largest crowd in any story: the possible people who will never exist — every alternative pairing, every meeting that almost happened, every lineage that ended one generation early. Dawkins's opening line in Unweaving the Rainbow calls them the unborn ghosts, and they outnumber the atoms of the observable universe many times over. A lottery with losers you can interview inspires envy; this one inspires only silence — the losers cannot complain, and the winners cannot help but speak.

None of these products is the probability that you exist now that you already do. It is a backward-looking measure over imagined alternatives, and its value changes with the question: this genome, this biography, any person, or any observer at all. Widen the target and the number rises; specify every detail and it falls without limit. The honest lesson is not a sacred denominator. It is that existence depends on a long sequence of contingent gates, while every reported estimate inherits a choice about which outcome counted as the target. A very small number can express specificity without showing that the specified outcome was unlikely under a well-defined physical lottery.
