Great Filter
Robin Hanson's name for whatever keeps the sky quiet: some step from dead matter to expanding civilization is nearly impossible. Behind us, or ahead?

The Great Filter is Robin Hanson's 1998 framing of the Fermi paradox. Lay the path from dead matter to a civilization visible across the galaxy out as a sequence of steps — the right kind of star system, self-replicating molecules, simple cells, complex cells, sexual reproduction, multicellular life, tool use, our present stage, and finally expansion into space. The sky is empty. Therefore at least one of those steps is so improbable that almost nothing gets past it. That step is the filter, and the only question that matters is where it sits relative to us.
The optimistic reading puts it behind us, and there are good candidates. Abiogenesis happened once, as far as anyone can tell. The eukaryotic cell — the merger that made complex life possible — also appears to have happened exactly once in four billion years, a suspicious number for something with that much time to recur. Complex nervous systems took another half-billion years after that. Any of those could be the wall, in which case the silence is just the sound of a wall we already climbed, and we are early rather than doomed.
The pessimistic reading puts it ahead, and it makes an uncomfortable prediction. If life is easy and intelligence is easy, then something reliably stops civilizations before they spread, and we have not met it yet. Nick Bostrom drew the consequence sharply in 2008: finding independent life on Mars would be bad news, and the more advanced it was, the worse. Every discovery that pushes the early steps toward 'easy' pushes the filter toward our future. This is one of the few cases where a null result from a telescope is the outcome to hope for.
The counter-argument is that no filter is needed at all: if the uncertainties in the Drake chain are as wide as they honestly are, empty skies fall out of the arithmetic without any single improbable step. On this site the filter is one more layer of the stack the tuner works on — before asking which step kills civilizations, note how many universes never reach the first one.
