The strength of electromagnetism — chemistry's one number. Nudge it and atoms change size; nudge it harder and there are no atoms.

α ≈ 1/137.036. It is the strength of the electromagnetic force, and it is the single number chemistry is made of: the size of every atom, the energy of every bond, the rate of every reaction in every star and every cell. Physicists have measured it to twelve decimal places and still have no idea why it has this value.
In the toy, α has no phase of its own. It lives inside everything the toy implies: the reason dust can clump into rock instead of bouncing off, the reason a planet can have a surface, the reason the word chemistry means anything at all.
Why life cares about α
The size of an atom scales as 1/α; the energy of a chemical bond scales as α². Life needs atoms small enough to be stable and bonds loose enough to break and remake — that is what metabolism is. Push α up and atoms shrink and bind ever more fiercely, until electrons begin diving into nuclei and chemistry turns violent. Push it down and atoms balloon and bonds weaken until molecules cannot hold together. The window for chemistry is not wide, and we sit comfortably inside it.
Both ways to die
• Too large: atoms shrink, bonds over-tighten, electrons collapse into nuclei. Chemistry becomes a one-way street to ash.
• Too small: atoms swell, bonds loosen, molecules fall apart at the slightest nudge. Chemistry becomes too weak to remember anything — and memory is what life is.
In the toy
α is the quietest dial: no toggle, no phase, no visible catastrophe when you drag it. That is the point. The toy shows you α's importance by absence — break the other dials and chemistry never gets a chance to matter. α is the dial that makes all the others worth tuning.
What you will see when you break it
α jumps from 1 to 4. The toy keeps its poker face — fires, hatching, dust, stars, all on schedule. But read the fine print: at four times our α, atoms shrink and bind too fiercely, and the chemistry that turns dust into planets into biospheres no longer works. The universe looks alive and is chemically dead. Some dials kill quietly.
